Installing More Than One GoldMine on the Same Machine
The installers for GoldMine 6.5, 6.6, 6.7 and 7.0 prevent the installation of multiple GoldMine installations on one machine. This is due to the way windows and the MSI (MicroSoft Installer) handles things. Windows records where the original setup is stored and where the resulting product is installed so that if you ever run the same setup, you have the options to reinstall, repair, etc. the existing program (in our case, GoldMine.) As a result, if you run the GoldMine setup again, you don’t get the opportunity to install another GoldMine!
FrontRange have released stand-alone fixes for this in the past in the form of ‘gimli.exe’ programs that were designed to eliminate the stored setup files and the record of where they were stored so you could then run the same GoldMine setup and specify a different folder without messing up your existing GoldMine. This can be quite useful for setting up a test GoldMine or in various other situations. Of course, you’ll want to review your license agreement and always adhere to it.
To install a second GoldMine on a machine on which GoldMine 6.5 (or newer) has already been installed:
- Go here: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=290301
- Download the Windows Installer Cleanup utility and run it.
- When it’s run, you’re presented with a list of installed programs (that use the MSI).
- Locate the item that looks something like: (All users) GoldMine Corporate Edition (6.7.0) and remove it.
- Run the GoldMine setup again and it ought to allow you to install to a second location!
Notes:
- Always remember to backup prior to following instructions you find on someone’s web site or running a relatively obscure tool from Microsoft. You’ll thank yourself if things go wrong!
- Remember that when you install GoldMine add-ons later, they may look to your registry and/or MSI insformation to figure out where your GoldMine is installed. This information will be correct for your LAST GoldMine installed — not, necessarily, the correct one. You may need to adjust the settings in those applications, as necessary.
- By following these instructions you agree that I cannot be held responsible for you completely destroying your system or violating your license agreement.
